Let Them Eat Cake

I’m very excited for my friend Kelli. This weekend, she’s realizing the culmination of a dream as she opens a new bakery here in Little Rock.

The name of her bakery is “Sweet Love Bakes,” and her motto is “Pretty things taste better.” That may be true, but really, I couldn’t care less how pretty her stuff is. All that matters to me is how freakin’ good it tastes.

On Sunday, a few friends got to pop in for a sneak peek at her place and to try some of her creations. It was pouring down rain, which would typically make me want to stay home, but I didn’t care. I’ve had Kelli’s treats before, and there was no way I was going to miss a chance to sample some new products.

Her mini cupcakes were delish. That pink buttercream icing is crazy good. She makes the best buttercream I’ve ever had. And I know my buttercream. The others had a ganache topping. I’m not normally a ganache fan, but this had a really nice texture.

These cookie dough truffles really surprised me. I expected them to be a little heavy and rich. Instead, they had a perfect touch of saltiness, which kept them from being cloyingly sweet.

These brownies were gooey perfection. They had little chunks of peppermint in them. Oh my.

While most people were heading for the chocolate, I snapped up one of these Big Kahunas. These bars had a macadamia nut/coconut/white chocolate thing going on that was just outstanding.

Besides stuffing our faces, we all enjoyed spending time together. It was the perfect place to spend a lazy afternoon, sipping some coffee, enjoying some good eats, and hanging out with friends. I see a lot of “Meet me at Sweet Loves!” in my future.

We took turns passing around the new babies. Sarabeth was a total baby hog when it came to Kat’s infinitely squeezable little girl.

Savannah’s daughter is my favorite gal ever, and I try to kidnap her every chance I get. But she made the mistake of trying to eat all the buttercream, and I had to school her right quick. Sometimes you just have to put kids in their place.

Kelli used Greg’s daughter to demonstrate an idea for a new product — baby wrapped in bacon, deep fried and dusted with powdered sugar.

Not really, but I could just eat her up, she’s so precious!

Sweet Love Bakes has its grand opening tomorrow night at 5:30. If you can, come on down and enjoy the celebration. If you can’t, get there soon. Besides selling desserts, Kelli also does special orders for all kinds of occasions. Sweet Love has an open decorating area, so you’ll be able to watch Kelli as she makes everything from custom decorated cookies to tiered wedding cakes.

I’ll see you at Sweet Loves!

Check out the Sweet Love Bakes site, and follow on Facebook and Twitter. Sweet Love Bakes is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9:00 to 5:30. It’s located at 8210 Cantrell Road in Little Rock, in the Cantrell Heights Shopping Center, just across from Pavilion in the Park.

Recycling And Wine

Did you know it’s America Recycles Day? Well now you do. At Jack’s school, the second graders are in charge of the school recycling program, so it’s practically a holiday for his class today. He told me he plans to be the water bottle police in the cafeteria at lunch, and I can just see him yelling “Respect my authoritah!” like Cartman at anyone who dares throw plastic in the trash can.

I plan on celebrating this day by recycling an old post. It’s Nick’s mulled wine recipe.

mulled wine

Yep, it’s that time of year!

Monday night, I developed a major craving for mulled wine. Even though it was nearly 80° outside, and even though we didn’t have most of the ingredients, I had to have it! Nick indulged me and whipped up a batch without oranges or orange juice, and with Sierra Mist instead of Sprite.

It was still awesome. And there’s still a little bit of it on the stove right now. It’s rainy and cooler today, so you know we’ll be finishing it off tonight.

So go check out the recipe and make a batch for yourself. The holiday season wouldn’t be the same without it!

Huzzah for homegrown tomatoes! They’re one of the few things that make summer bearable.

My Obligatory Type-A Conference Post Post

Whenever anyone goes to a conference, they love talking about the “takeaway.” What was the takeaway? Who had the best takeaway? If you could sum up your your takeaway in three words, what would it be?

Screw conference takeaway. If you ask me about my best takeaway, it would probably be something like “Peking duck with pancakes, spring onions and hoisin sauce from that dump in Notting Hill.”

But I get it. If you’re going to spend money to attend an industry conference, you want to get some kind of return on your investment. Makes sense.

So what was my main takeaway from the Type-A conference?

You no longer have to suffer from travel constipation.

In my opinion, there are two kinds of people in this world: Those who suffer from travel constipation, and those who lie and say they don’t. I am an honest soul. I will freely admit that if my travels go longer than one hour and/or one night, my bowels lock down like Sing Sing during a riot.

But not this trip.

If you don’t know by now, blog conferences are all about the sponsors and swag. Well, not all about. They’re also about education and empowerment and networking and all other kinds of cool stuff. But they’re also about those cool presents and giveaways. And there is nothing wrong with that. The companies who choose to position themselves in front of large groups of people who make decisions about household purchases are genius and forward-thinking, if you ask me. And at Type-A, some of those companies saved my large intestine.

Meet the good guys:

Those WhoNu? cookies? Mommy’s new best friends. Not only are they unbelievably good, but they have an incredibly reasonably amount of calories, and they’re chock full of fiber, vitamins and minerals. I can indulge in them, and I can feed them to my kids, with no guilt. The Zone Perfect bars? Crack. Especially the Cashew Pretzel flavor. If you like a sweet/salty combination, it doesn’t get any better. And they’re packed with fiber and other nutritious stuff. And my friend Valerie gave me those crazy-good RHP vitamins. She gave me some for my kids, too, but those adult chews are the most delicious gummies ever, and I’ll be damned if they aren’t good for me. And don’t get me started on the DHA-orange juice chasers I drank to wash everything down, courtesy of Life’s DHA. Add it all together, and you know what you get?

A bowel movement.

You can stop laughing right now, because you know as well as I do how much a well-timed bowel movement can make or break your trip.

But in all seriousness (and you know how it pains me to be serious), I look at this trend of healthy swag and sponsorships by responsible companies as a good thing. I applaud Kelby, who started Type-A, for being forward-thinking and for looking at the bigger picture. I applaud her for not exposing us to junk and crap. I applaud the companies who are trying to make a difference and do better. I applaud the companies who realize our children matter, and that we parents want to learn about what helps them. And I applaud the women who demand more for themselves and their families, and who refuse to be bought by any old company waving something shiny or free in their faces.

My trip to Type-A was amazing. I finally met some of the most wonderful women I’ve ever had the chance to chat online with. I met some people I’ve never heard of, but who I’m dying to know more about. I danced my butt off. I laughed till I cried. I got a (fake) tattoo from one of the most talented and creative artists I’ve ever met. I learned a lot about myself.

And I pooped like a champion for five days away from home. It doesn’t get any better than that.

Marinated Crab Claws Recipe

I tend to miss Louisiana this time of year. Between Mardi Gras and the gorgeous weather and the crawfish boils, there’s a lot to miss.

Nick must have been feeling it too, because he suggested a trip to Copeland’s. I typically enjoy the Copeland’s restaurants in Louisiana, but the one here in Little Rock doesn’t seem quite as good. But we went last night anyway, and Nick ordered the crab claw appetizers. Not so great. They only reminded me of how much better the homemade version is.

You’ll find these marinated crab claws at every party in Louisiana. I’m not sure where the recipe originated, but they taste just like the ones from Ernest’s to me. Wherever they came from, they are incredible.

Note that this isn’t a spur-of-the-moment recipe. It takes a little planning ahead, as you make the marinade a couple of days before serving. Plus it’s a little labor intensive, as there’s lots of chopping involved, but the finished product is well worth the work.

Make this marinade 48 hours in advance of serving.

1 cup chopped green onions — tops and bottoms
1 cup chopped celery — stalks and leaves
4 pods garlic, chopped (note that it’s pods, not cloves)
1 cup chopped parsley
2 cups spanish olive oil (yep, Spanish tastes different)
2 cups tarragon vinegar (must be tarragon flavor)
juice of 6 lemons — it’s easiest to use Minute Maid frozen lemon concentrate
2 Tbsp salt
1 Tbsp pepper

Mix above ingredients and refrigerate. About 10 hours before serving, LIGHTLY wash cocktail crab claws, just enough to separate them. (Cocktail crab claws are sold in pint size containers, and this marinade amount is enough for 4 containers.) Put the crab claws in the marinade, and return to refrigerator until about 30 minutes before serving. I like to let them come close to room temperature before eating, rather than have them be cold.

Place crab claws on a serving platter (they look lovely pinwheeled on a round platter) and spoon some extra marinade over them. You can also serve them with Leidenheimer bread or a nice, crusty French loaf, as the marinade on its own is delicious.

Hot Dog Mike took the pic for me at one of my parties. He makes food look good.
